Hot Chocolate

| Hot Chocolate as we know it today, was first consumed as just a chocolate beverage. The consumption of chocolate as a beverage dates back to thousands of years ago. Since prehistoric times, cocoa beans have grown on trees in Central America. It also grows in South America, Africa and part of Asia. The first recipe for a chocolate drink was published in Spain in 1631 and was a mixture of ground cocoa beans, water, wine, and peppers. The first known mixture of hot chocolate was in 1643. Spaniards began heating the mixture and sweetening it with sugar. Soon 'hot chocolate' became a fashionable drink enjoyed by the rich in Spain. The first “chocolate house” opened in London in 1657 and became as popular as coffee houses. Milk was added to the after dinner treat around 1700. It is reported that Thomas Jefferson became a great hot chocolate lover and in a letter to John Adams written in 1785, he wrote, "The superiority of hot chocolate, both for health and nourishment, will soon give it the same preference over tea and coffee in America which it has in Spain.” Our hot chocolate listing includes both regular and no sugar added.
